Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of August 3-5, 2012:
1. Composting Basics
When: Friday, 1-2 p.m.
Where: Library Garden, Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Believe it or not, there is such a person as a master composter. Here is your chance to speak with one, John Barutt, and learn the basics and probably more since it’s a 60-minute workshop.
2. The Art of Alan Rudolph (Plus Reception)
When: Friday, 5-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Island resident Alan Rudolph, a well-known film director and painter, is showing his work as part of the First Friday Arts Walk. You might know him as the man behind “Choose Me”, “Trouble in Mind,” and “Afterglow.” Now get to know him as a painter.
3. Introduction to the Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
When: Friday, 6 p.m.
Where: In front of Blackbird Cafe
Why: No, those tombstone-shaped stands you’ve seen in a few select places on Winslow are not ATM machines. Nor are they tombstones. What they are is electric vehicle charging stations. Ben Hoover, ECOtality’s Business Development Executive, will bring a Nissan Leaf to demonstrate how it works. Ask questions about electric vehicles and find out if it’s cool to park in those spots if you drive a big-old gas guzzler. Or will you be getting the stink eye?
4. First Fridays Art Walk
When: Friday, 6-8 p.m.
Where: Downtown Winslow
Why: New month, new Arts Walk, new art, new food.
5. Art for First Friday at HRB
When: Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Housing Resources Board, 250 Madrona Way NE
Why: HRB asked its residents who are artists to submit their work for this Arts Walk show. See the wood carvings of Nguyet Tran carved from Vietnamese Trai wood, Melissa Ellis’s dolls and stuffed toys, and Hiromi Paxhia’s scarves.
6. Hey Marseilles at Bloedel Reserve
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve
Why: The Bloedel Reserve’s summer concert series kicks off with this offbeat, Seattle favorite indie orchestral pop band. Seven musicians, 11 instruments. Plus, you get complimentary light refreshments, and libations are for sale.
$30 ($25 for members). Tickets on sale at 842-7631 or brownpapertickets.com.
7. Northwest Puppet Theater: Cenerentola
When: Saturday, 1 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve
Why: Cenerentola is a fancy, possibly Italian way of saying Cinderella. And you can be sure the hand-carved Cenerentola marionette will sweep. But this version soon veers off from the one you know.
$20 adults, $7 children. Tickets on sale at 842-7631 or brownpapertickets.com.
8. Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra at Bloedel Reserve
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve
Why: You get to see the region’s best female jazz artists in one of the region’s best gardens. Again with the complimentary light refreshments and the libations for sale.
SWOJO in Lima, Peru (La Victoria)
SWOJO – Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra | Myspace Music Videos
