Kids Discovery Museum, better known as KiDiMu, is turning 10, and you’re invited to the Birthday Bash this Saturday, June 6. Executive Director Susie Burdick put it this way: “We are excited to invite the community to celebrate with us and recognize a momentous occasion when we all came together to create a home for early learning on Bainbridge Island.”

KiDiMuSince the very beginning in 2005, that home was intended for all early learners. KiDiMu is committed to a policy of not turning anyone away and of embracing families with unique needs. Each year thousands of people take advantage of monthly Free First Thursdays, free field trips, camp scholarships, passes for underserved children, and free memberships for Foster Families.

The Reptile ManKiDiMu has also more recently joined the Blue Star Museums and Gold Star free-admission programs for military families in need of support. And in 2013, KiDiMu partnered with parents and therapists to develop programs for children with autism and similar challenges.

Over its first decade as the only children’s museum in Kitsap, KiDiMu has attracted about 300,000 visitors. That’s a lot to celebrate.

The Birthday Bash starts at 10 a.m., offering free admission throughout the day. ATLaS, Bainbridge High School Spartronics’ robot, will launch the day’s festivities on the plaza. Catie’s Photography will be on hand from 10 a.m. to noon for snapshots. Also starting at 10 and only while supplies last, kids can enjoy a birthday candle craft and sign up for a special free cupcake costume workshop, preparing them to join KiDiMu in the July 4 Parade.

Reptile Petting ZooAt 11, Roberto the Magnificent will dazzle with magic. Apparently Roberto is so magnificent he’s got some pipes as he has been asked to lead attendees in singing “Happy Birthday” right before the cake-cutting ceremony and a special announcement about a new museum exhibit. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., attendees can join in science experiments led by multiple Emmy Award-winning writer, educator, and geek mama Lynn Brunelle or get their faces painted and enjoy free milk courtesy of Smith Brothers Farms.

Recess Monkey drops in at noon to entertain the wildest revelers. At 1, The Reptile Man will slither in for a special presentation, followed by the Reptile Petting Zoo from 2 to 3.

Throughout the day, barring any emergencies, the Bainbridge Police and Fire Departments will be on site with their vehicles so kids can climb in and check out the view. The Bainbridge Public Library will be leading kids in activities. And That’s a Some Pizza and Smoth●e will be offering refreshments for sale. Visitors will be treated to complimentary tattoos, balloons, and party hats.

Guests will be invited to share their museum memories from the last decade and to show their support by purchasing a special KiDiMu number and commemorative button with a $10 donation. The fun wraps up around 4 p.m.
